" His delight is in the law of the Lord;
And in his law doth he meditate day and night." -Ps 1:2

The Law has come to bear a negative association for most evangelical Christians. It is associated with sin and death, because it shows how far we are from keeping it, and how worthy we are of eternal damnation. It is associated with shame and guilt when we assert that the Law is right, but we know we are sinful, and know we can never keep it fully. It is associated with legalists - who beat us over the head by insisting we adhere to every single letter. It is negatively viewed by liberals - who insist that Christ's work rendered it null and void and we no longer need to worry about it. It is the subject of scorn and ridicule by atheists who call its provisions archaic and antiquated ( no mixed material in clothes, support for slavery and capital punishment) and insist we should be more open minded about same sex marriages, occult practices, even sex with animals.

So what is delightful about it?

The Law reveals to us the heart and mind of God. Like a mirror - it reveals to us our shortcomings, yet in the same breath, makes provision for them through the sacrifices that cover our sin, and bring us into fellowship with Him. It demonstrates his heart for the poor, the unfortunate, the stranger/alien, and animals. He was an environmentalist before the term became fashionable by enjoining a sabbath for the land, for sustainable cultivation, even for birds and animals! Hygiene, diet, maintaining the sanctity of marriage , equal treatment for women and compassionate treatment of employees. There are also provisions made for our less than perfect selves - manslaughter, divorce, suspicions of infidelity, these are all treated in here!

In the coming weeks we will endeavor, God willing, to go through the entire Law, in Facebook post format :-) in order that the beauty and the delight that king David saw in it may be exposed to our eyes.
For this week, I would just invite you to read Psalm 119- which expresses the wonders and delights that are unlocked when we read and behold the wonderful things that have been written for our edification and comfort. Our hope and prayer is that when we are done, you will read Psalm 119 again and agree with every line that is written in there!
